March HALO
Dear Parents,

As we enter the month of March, we are, also, entering the final quarter of the school year.  Where does the time go?  During this final quarter there are many activities and the HALO, the Friday updates, and the Cathedral Parish School website will provide the information.  Please continue to use these means of communication for the school updates.

Over the past few months, I have communicated some of the issues the school is having with students texting each other.  The majority of the texting issues are resulting from students using their electronic devices outside of school and, then, parents are coming to us to intervene.  This is really not the place of the school to intervene when the problem comes from after school hours.  Please continue to check your student's computers, telephones or any other electronic devices students can use for communicating.  Students are using their electronic devices to say and ask questions of each other which they would never say face-to-face. Be proactive.

Our middle school students are participating in the SJSO program on bullying which the SJSO presents in the public schools.  Officer Melissa Underwood, a CPS and SJA graduate, is the facilitator.  The boys and girls are being separated for the presentation.

The 25th Annual Cathedral Parish Festival will be the weekend of April 23-25th.  There is no school on April 26th.  This day has been designated as a clean-up day for parents and students to earn service hours.  Last year, was the first year this clean up day was instituted and it was very successful.  Please plan your day to include clean up from 8:00 am to 11:00 am.

Sincerely,

Janet Morton
Principal
Multi-Cultural Fair
On the Thursday evening of February 11, 2010, the Cathedral Parish School Community celebrated cultural diversity by holding a multicultural fair.  Parents and relatives were invited to share the experience with their children by visiting the school's classrooms where different countries and cultures were on display.

Teachers, students and parent volunteers worked together to transform the classrooms into diverse destinations.  Tasting delicious ethnic food, and experiencing exciting and engaging student-made research projects and artwork were featured in the evening's activities.  Kindergarten represented the Olympics and created displays with an international flavor.  First grade celebrated the wonderful country of the United States of America.  Second and third grade created an Asian experience by focusing on Japan and China respectively.  Fourth grade explored Spain, while fifth grade worked to transport its visitors to Mexico and Canada.  The sixth grade provided a tour of India. Seventh grade made Africa and African-American studies its destination. Lastly, the eighth grade focused on Holocaust Studies in order to highlight the need to respect and embrace diversity.

The multicultural fair was organized by the Social Studies Committee of Cathedral Parish School that includes Vicky Tibbitts, Glenna Graff, John Algreen, Kelly Giglio, and Holly Faustini, but the success of the fair was made possible by the entire staff,  the PTO and school community of Cathedral Parish School. A huge thank you to the classroom teachers, parents, and the PTO for making our night of diversity truly something very special.

Grades 2 and 3 represented the Far East and Mr. Greenfelder, a second grade parent, constructed the Tori Gate.

Kindergarten finished the Olympics on a high note with medals being presented by Mrs. Morton at the Closing Ceremonies on February 19.  This month they will be attending Mass on the 2nd and the 16th.  The children are doing a great job walking to and from Mass, as well as sitting like big kids while we are there.

 First Grade

First Grades to visit IMAX on March 11th.

Second Grade

Second grade has been very busy!  We celebrated Black History Month by learning about many famous African Americans and their achievements.  Each student has written and illustrated a mini book highlighting their lives and accomplishments.

In Language Arts, we had fun learning sound words, also known as onomatopoeia.
       Whoosh goes the wind!
       Chatter goes my teeth.
I can't wait for the warmth of spring!

In science students have learned many facts about their bodies and the importance of good nutrition.  They made a food pyramid and put together a human skeleton.

On March 6th at 9:00 a.m. at The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, second grade students, who are members of The Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, will receive the sacrament of First Penance.

 SECOND GRADE - ITBS TESTING

The ITBS Tests will be administered to second grade March 8th -19th.   Please make every effort to have your student present and on time during the testing period.  Once a test has begun a student may not enter the classroom until the test is over.

Fourth Grade

This month, fourth grade will tour Flagler College which highlights the architectural
heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon.  This part of the college was built by millionaire developer Henry M. Flagler in 1887.
While at the college, we will visit the Rotunda where we will look up into an 80-foot domed ceiling supported in part by eight ornately carved oak caryatids, robed women copied from the temple of Diana in Greece.
Our tour also will include the Dining Hall where 79 of Louis Comfort Tiffany's stained glass windows are displayed. Then onto the Flagler Room where we will gaze upon Tiffany Austrian crystal chandeliers, a massive onyx Thomas Edison clock, and a historical photo gallery of the Flagler family.

Seventh Grade

On March 19th, Mrs. Heiser will, once again, take her seventh grade religion classes to Orlando for the Holy Land Experience trip. The students will experience Jesus' walk from the Via Dolorsa, the road in which Christ carried the Cross, to Calvary's Garden.

Eighth Grade

8th Grade English Students Decide:
Is God a Verb or a Noun?

Saying that God is a noun, in my mind, says that he is just a figure.  But thinking of Him as a verb just seems to make more sense.  God as a verb shows me that He is active in our lives, not just being a figure to look up to.  He is always present in our lives, helping us to make decisions.  Without Him being active, we would probably start heading down the wrong path in life.
       ...Tyler Thibault

I agree that God is a verb on the basis that His unconditional love is at work in any serious, strong relationship, but I feel that God is used to describe all of the greatness and love that is our Father.  His good values are always at work in relationships, but actually I think God would best be used as an adjective describing greatness:  the God-like attitude, the God-like joy, and the God-like salvation.
